Now before you judge me, you should know that this has a lot to do with the DARK SIDE of human nature.

In the 1960s Stanley Milgram invited ordinary people to participate in experiments designed (so he said) to study the effect of punishment in learning.

These experiments forever changed the way we look at ourselves.

There were "teachers" in the experiment, and there were "learners". Teachers were brought into a room with some control knobs. A short distance away the Learner was hooked up to equipment that would deliver painful electric shocks (up to 450 volts).

The Learner was asked questions, and if she got the answer wrong, the teacher administered a shock (it started at 15 volts, and was increased at the experimenter's command).

Here's the shocker:

65% of the "teachers" went all the way to 450 volts when instructed by the experimenter, even though it was clearly indicated that this was "potentially lethal".

In reality the "learner" was an actor, and was not really being shocked, but that doesn't change the fact that the "teachers" thought they were delivering potentially lethal shocks, even though the "learner" had done nothing wrong except to answer a question incorrectly.

That's awful, you say, but . . .

Most of these "teachers" were decent citizens. Under normal circumstances they were full of empathy for their fellow human beings. They were all horified by their behavior after the experiment was over. But something about the experiment created a moral blindspot so big you could drive a truck through it.

Likewise, most snorers have a moral blindspot that prevents them from empathizing with their bedmates, even though they're great people in every other way.

Take me for example. I'm an empathetic guy. I'm a courteous driver. I try to be on time. I like to help people. But I didn't take my snoring seriously, even though it made my wife suffer from chronic sleep deprivation.

I've talked with other couples afflicted by snoring, too, and I realized we're not alone. This is a COMMON blindspot for human beings!
